How is The Dental Crown Made?
A dental crown is an artificial cap designed to cover the whole of a damaged tooth. Typically, dental crowns are used to cover teeth with severe damage that aren’t suitable for fillings or inlays, or they can cover teeth with fractures to provide support.
During your appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth by smoothing the surface and removing anything that may cause problems during the bonding process. A digital image of the tooth is then taken and converted into a 3D model, which is used as a guide for the design of your dental crown. Finally, an onsite machine will create a new tooth from a ceramic block, which can take as little as six minutes depending on the complexity of your tooth. Once created, the crown is simply bonded into place on the prepared tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is CEREC so fast?
The CEREC system uses similar technology to the labs that would usually create your crown, the only difference is that CEREC can be placed onsite. This removes the need to send off your impressions and makes it possible for your crown to be ready within 30 minutes.
Will I need impressions taken?
No. Unlike traditional dental crown methods, CEREC relies entirely on digital imaging so you won’t need to have any impressions taken.
What if the ceramic block is the wrong colour?
Once the dental crown is produced your dentist can stain it to match your other teeth, so it will look just as natural.
